Voici des renseignements supplementaires (en anglais) sur l’ accord entre JOGCMEC et Gecamines annoncé en Afrique du Sud cette semaine:
This milestone collaboration, forged through dialogue among Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) partners, creates a framework for coordination in mineral exploration, production, and processing in areas of mining and mineral resources with the intention of expanding of business opportunities for the parties involved. There was no public signing ceremony with press coverage for this memorandum of understanding between JOGMEC and GECAMINES representatives. Therefore, we do not have a copy to make available. The official parties involved signed it privately onsite at the Mining Indaba Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
However, you are welcome to use the attached photo of Under Secretary Jose W. Fernandez alongside the MOU participants immediately following the signing and prior to his announcement on the Indaba main stage on February 5, 2024. The Minerals Security Partnership aims to accelerate the development of diverse and sustainable critical minerals supply chains by working with host governments and the private sector to facilitate targeted financial and diplomatic support for strategic projects along the value chain.
The MSP considers projects along the full value chain, prioritizing projects with high ESG standards to ensure the projects add value to the local economies and protect the environment. It’s not about designing out China’s role as part of the clean tech supply chain, rather it’s about ensuring diverse and secure supply chains that are not dependent on a single source. We seek to offer African countries a choice by demonstrating the benefits of our governance and economic partnership models. The United States and our likeminded partners are pursuing avenues for sustainable African growth.
